Not Jetty Park: The Peaceful Florida Campground With Dolphins & Rocket Launch Views

Florida's east central coast is well-known for its nature and wildlife. Much of this fame, especially among anglers, is based around the iconic Indian River Lagoon. In stark contrast to the serene natural surroundings, the region is also home to the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, sitting just across the lagoon from the mainland, and from which NASA often launches spacecraft. This combination of nature and rocket launches draws loads of visitors and has placed facilities like Port Canaveral's Jetty Park at the top of the list for many vacationers. However, just across from Jetty Park, the less-heralded Manatee Hammock Park and Campground offers visitors the chance to watch dolphins and other wildlife as well as rocket launches within a peaceful, uncrowded setting.

Manatee Hammock Park is located on the southern end of the town of Titusville, just a 20-minute drive from Jetty Park. The 26.45-acre park and campground is on the mainland, but that, too, is an advantage. For one, it is directly off of U.S. Hwy 1 — which runs along the entirety of Florida's east coast — making it easy to get to from either the north or south. It is also conveniently located due east of Orlando. Despite being on the edge of town, the park still feels secluded and peaceful.

Being situated on the mainland gives visitors a chance to view stunning sunrises over the Indian River Lagoon. Additionally, it faces the Cape Canaveral launch site. The park even has benches set up for viewing rocket launches. This viewing distance makes Manatee Hammock Park an ideal location to watch rockets take off without enduring the deafening noise of the powerful engines that propel them. In fact, this is an excellent viewing spot for both day and night launches, the latter often illuminating the water fronting the park.

While rocket launches are a sight to behold, they are not the only thing that grabs your attention at Manatee Hammock Park. Much of the acreage in the park is populated by a hammock comprising pine and palm trees, along with other foliage, which draws in a myriad of birds — including red-shouldered hawks — and small mammals. A hiking trail winds through the park, allowing visitors a chance to view nature up close.

Moving along the waterfront, it is also quite common to see pods of dolphins — one of those wild animals that are way smarter than you think — frolicking and feeding. The park also features a nearly 200-foot-long pier jutting out into the water. This is a perfect platform for fishing, admiring nature, and viewing rocket launches. The entire shoreline, including the pier, affords an outstanding vantage point for catching the sunrise each morning as it moves above the lagoon. 

Manatee Hammock Park features 163 RV campsites with full hookups. There are also 19 tent camping sites with water and electric and a group tent camping area. The park features hot showers, a swimming pool, and laundry facility. Other amenities include pickleball, bag toss, and shuffleboard courts. There is even a store in case you forget any camping essentials. Do note that if you are looking to book the perfect campsite, you should do so well in advance to ensure you get your desired dates.
